What's After the Movie
George Brent (born George Brendan Nolan; 15 March 1904 – 26 May 1979) was an Irish‑American actor whose career spanned stage, film, and early television. Born in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, Brent emigrated with his family to New York in 1915 and later returned to Ireland, where he briefly served with the Irish Republican Army before fleeing to the United States. After a stint in Canadian and American stock theatres, he made his Broadway debut in The Dover Road and became a prolific stage performer throughout the 1920s. In 1930 he entered Hollywood with Under Suspicion for 20th Century Fox, quickly becoming a leading man for Warner Bros. and a frequent co‑star of Bette Davis, appearing together in eleven films including the classics Jezebel (1938) and Dark Victory (1939). His suave, aristocratic screen persona made him a popular romantic lead opposite stars such as Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Blondell, and Ann Sheridan. During World II he served as a civilian flight instructor and later as a U.S. Coast Guard pilot, temporarily stepping away from acting. After the war Brent returned to the screen, though his star dimmed as studio budgets shrank; he appeared in genre pictures, B‑movies, and eventually migrated to television, guest‑starring on series such as Rawhide and starring in the short‑lived Wire Service (1956). His final screen appearance came in the 1978 religious drama Born Again. Brent was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, recognizing his contributions to both film and television. He died of natural causes in Solana Beach, California, in 1979, leaving behind a legacy of classic Hollywood romance and a lasting association with one of cinema’s most celebrated leading ladies, Bette Davis.
