Colonel Ferris, a prosperous northern‑California farmer, battles the spread of hydraulic mining, a new 1870s gold‑rush technique that threatens to drown his fertile lands. Mining engineer Jared Whitney, visiting from the East, befriends Ferris’s son Lance and falls for his sister Serena. Tensions rise when Ferris’s brother Ralph abandons farming for a San Francisco mining job under his father‑in‑law Harrison McCooey, prompting Lance to follow him and Ferris to bar Jared from seeing Serena.
