In 1981, we meet Kenny Wells, played by Matthew McConaughey, who is managing a prospecting company named Washoe alongside his father, a man he deeply admires. However, after the death of his father, Kenny’s life takes a turn for the worse, and seven years later, he finds himself nearly destitute, struggling to keep the business afloat. With the company office long gone, he and his colleagues are now working out of the bar owned by his girlfriend, Kay, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard.
Fueled by an aspirational dream, Kenny travels to Indonesia, where he encounters Michael Acosta, played by Édgar Ramírez, a geologist who is also facing financial hardships. After countless discussions, Kenny successfully persuades Mike to join forces and embark on a mining venture together. Once back in America, he works tirelessly to secure the promised capital required to fund their mining enterprise.
However, their initial foray into mining does not go as planned; the promised gold is nowhere to be found, leading to disheartened workers leaving the site. Yet, with a persuasive promise of fresh water from Mike, they manage to rally everyone back. Kenny, unfortunately, contracts malaria and spends weeks incapacitated. Upon regaining his health, he learns from Mike that they have finally struck gold, igniting a wave of celebration.
Returning to America, Kenny sets up a new office for Washoe and encounters a major Wall Street bank’s interests. Mike attends a crucial meeting with Kenny, and in a bid to impress the bank, he proposes showing them the mine in Indonesia. This strategic move wins over the bank, leading to a staggering $20 million investment in Washoe, propelling the venture to the public market where it sees a remarkable increase of 70 points on its first day.
As Kenny revels in newfound success, his life transforms into one continuous celebration. However, this joy does not come without tensions. Kay, uneasy about Kenny’s extravagant lifestyle and the potential deceit surrounding their burgeoning success, confronts him, especially after witnessing him flirtily interacting with another woman, Rachael Hill. An executive named Mark Hancock, played by Bruce Greenwood, seeks to purchase a stake in Kenny’s company, offering a staggering $300 million but with the caveat of erasing Washoe’s name. Offended, Kenny turns down the deal.
Disastrously, Kenny learns that the Indonesian government has closed their mine. Adding to the chaos, he discovers that a former U.S. President is linked to Hancock’s firm and has a close relationship with Indonesia’s President Suharto. Though initially despondent, Mike returns to America with a plan to regain control of the mine. They convince the Indonesian president’s son to partner with them, and Kenny strengthens his resolve when he impressively tames a tiger, leading to the reopening of the mine under favorable terms for Washoe.
As Kenny contemplates reconciling with Kay, he hesitates after seeing her flirting at her new workplace. His fortunes take an exciting turn when he is honored with a golden pickaxe, a highly coveted accolade for a miner. However, the next day, a horrifying situation unfolds as Kenny is inundated by an irate crowd outside his office. It is revealed that the mine’s gold was a ruse; Mike had orchestrated a deception by salting the mine—placing false gold in the rocks, having traded for river gold earlier shown in the story. In the midst of this chaos, Mike is revealed to have fled the scene.
In the aftermath, Kenny is subjected to questioning by the FBI. Sitting in a hotel room devoid of finances, he recounts the series of events that transpired. The agents express belief in his story, later disclosing that Mike had been apprehended in Indonesia and possibly forced to jump from a helicopter into the jungle. Though his death remains a mystery, it is suggested that insiders, including the Indonesian minister, profited significantly from the ruse.
Ultimately, Kenny returns to Kay’s premise, seeking forgiveness. While sorting through their past exchanges, he stumbles upon the original agreement he made with Mike—a simple napkin with the scribbled terms “50-50,” accompanied by a startling discovery: a deposit slip of $82 million made out to a bank in Gibraltar. In this tale of ambition, deception, and the complexities of personal relationships, Kenny’s journey leaves audiences pondering the true cost of success.
