Out of the Blue 1947

In a Greenwich Village apartment, Arthur Earthleigh, [George Brent], lives under the thumb of his wife Mae Earthleigh, [Carole Landis], and is constantly irritated by Rabelais, the neighbor’s German Shepherd owned by the artist and swinging bachelor David Gelleo, [Turhan Bey]. Deborah Tyler, [Virginia Mayo], visits with the idea of breeding Rabelais with her own dog, adding another layer to the building’s tense, quirky atmosphere.

One night Mae leaves to visit her sister, and Arthur heads to a bar where he’s approached by Olive, [Ann Dvorak], an interior decorator with a fondness for brandy she swears eases her heart condition, though it makes her tipsy. Arthur tries to send Olive away, but she slips into the guest room without him noticing. The next morning, he discovers Olive not only spent the night but also redecorated the room, turning his quiet space into something unrecognizable. In a panic, Arthur tries to eject her, and in the struggle he knocks Olive to the floor, fearing he may have killed her.

Olive’s supposed body is then moved around by David, who uses Arthur’s fear of having killed Olive to blackmail him into dropping a court order that would force David to get rid of his dog. The tension tightens as Arthur sees himself trapped between fear and coercion, unable to settle the escalating pressure without compromising more than just his reputation.

Meanwhile, a serial killer stalks the Village, and two elderly snoopers—Miss Spring, [Elizabeth Patterson], and Miss Ritchie, [Julia Dean]—become convinced Olive is his latest victim. Their suspicions creep closer to the scene, turning the already fraught living situation into a web of doubt, paranoia, and mistaken conclusions, all while Mae returns and the domestic orbit threatens to spin out of control.

As the apartment hums with conversations, schemes, and half-glimpsed danger, the characters collide in a neighborhood where art, affection, and fear intersect. Olive’s sharp wit, Arthur’s anxious restraint, Mae’s steadfast presence, and David’s unsettling charm create a delicate balance of dark comedy and suspense that keeps the story moving, inviting viewers to watch how each decision echoes through the small, lived-in world of the Village.
