They can be driven by a technological innovation, a shift in cultural mood, or the breakout success of a film that creates a new, profitable formula for others to imitate.

Understanding film trends is key to understanding the history of cinema itself, as they chart the evolution of both popular storytelling and the business of filmmaking.

Examples of Major Film Trends

Film history is defined by the rise and fall of trends:

• Genre Trends: These are the most common type of trend. A few notable examples include the boom in epic fantasy films following the massive success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the early 2000s, the wave of found-footage horror films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity in the late 1990s and 2000s, and the near-total dominance of the superhero genre in the 2010s, kicked off by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
