ACES Archival

ACES Archival is the practice of using the Academy Color Encoding System as a standardized, device-independent framework for the long-term storage of digital motion picture masters.


A Digital Vault for Color

As filmmaking has transitioned from photochemical to digital workflows, the challenge of long-term archiving has shifted from preserving physical film to preserving digital data. ACES Archival is a modern preservation strategy that leverages the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) to create a stable, universal, and future-proof digital master file for a motion picture. Developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ACES is an open, free, and device-independent color management system designed to standardize the color pipeline for the entire industry, from on-set capture to final delivery and archival.

The Problem with Proprietary Formats

In the past, films were often archived in whatever format the post-production house used, or in a format tied to a specific display standard like Rec. 709 (for HDTV). This creates a long-term problem: camera recording formats can become obsolete, and display standards are constantly evolving (from SD to HD to 4K HDR and beyond). Creating a new version for a future display technology would require going back to the original source elements and starting the color grading process over. ACES Archival solves this by creating a single, definitive master that is not tied to any one device or standard.

The Core Benefits of ACES for Archiving

Using ACES as an archival format offers several key advantages that ensure the long-term viability and integrity of a film’s creative vision:

  • Standardization and Interoperability: ACES provides a single, universally understood specification for color encoding. An archive receiving an ACES master file knows exactly what it is and how to handle it, regardless of what cameras or software were used to create it. This eliminates the guesswork involved with proprietary formats.
  • Vast Color Gamut: The primary ACES color space, known as ACES2065-1 (AP0), is enormous. It is a ‘scene-referred’ linear space designed to encompass the full range of colors and brightness levels that can be captured by any past, present, or future digital camera or film scan. This ensures that no color or highlight detail from the original photography is lost or ‘clipped’ in the archival master.
  • Future-Proof by Design: Because the ACES master contains all the original image data in a neutral, device-independent format, it can be used to easily generate new high-quality deliverables for any future viewing technology. Whether the standard in 50 years is holographic projection or direct neural interface, the ACES master will serve as the pristine source from which a new version can be derived using a simple, standardized color transformation (an Output Device Transform, or ODT).

The Archival Format

The standard file format for an ACES Archival master is a sequence of OpenEXR (.exr) files. OpenEXR is an open-source, high-dynamic-range image file format developed by Industrial Light & Magic. When encoded with ACES2065-1 data, it creates a robust, uncompressed, and fully documented digital negative—the modern, future-proof equivalent of a photochemical preservation master.
