Dhallywood

Dhallywood is the popular portmanteau for the mainstream, Bengali-language film industry based in the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Cinema of Bangladesh 🇧🇩

Coined in the same vein as ‘Hollywood’ and ‘Bollywood,’ the term Dhallywood is a portmanteau of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, and Hollywood. It refers to the heart of the country’s commercial film production, which has historically been one of the most prolific in South Asia. For decades, Dhallywood has produced films primarily for its large domestic audience, creating a distinct cinematic culture with its own stars, genres, and traditions.

Characteristics of Mainstream Dhallywood

Traditionally, the commercial output of Dhallywood has been dominated by ‘masala’ films, a genre characterized by a potent blend of different elements designed for mass appeal:

  • Formulaic Plots: Stories often revolve around familiar themes of romance, family drama, and high-stakes action.
  • Musical Sequences: Like its Indian counterparts, song-and-dance numbers are a central and non-negotiable feature. These musical sequences are crucial for a film’s marketing and popular appeal.
  • Star Power: The industry is heavily driven by a star system, with the popularity of leading actors and actresses being a primary factor in a film’s box office success.

Evolution and New Directions

While the industry faced significant challenges in the 2000s, including a decline in quality and rampant piracy, recent years have seen a concerted effort at revitalization. A new generation of filmmakers, often working outside the traditional Dhallywood studio system, has emerged. These directors are focused on more diverse stories, higher production values, and gaining international recognition. This has created a parallel track of critically acclaimed Bangladeshi cinema that is increasingly finding a voice at international film festivals, presenting a contrast to the mainstream commercial fare of Dhallywood.
