The Architect of an Artist’s Career

While a talent agent’s focus is transactional—securing the next job—a talent manager’s role is strategic and holistic. A manager is a close advisor who helps an artist shape and guide the long-term trajectory of their career. They are the big-picture thinkers, responsible for developing the artist’s brand, making key strategic decisions, and coordinating the various members of their professional team.

Because they are not legally permitted to procure employment for their clients, their work is focused on development and guidance. They act as the central hub of an artist’s career, ensuring that the agent, publicist, and attorney are all working in sync towards the same goals.

Scope of Responsibilities

The duties of a talent manager are broad and often deeply personal:

• Career Strategy: Advising the client on which roles to pursue or decline, what image to project, and what long-term career goals to aim for. They help the artist make choices that build a sustainable and meaningful career, rather than just chasing a paycheck.
• Development: Identifying areas for growth and connecting the artist with resources like acting coaches, dialect coaches, or new stylists. They may also help an artist develop their own projects, such as finding a script to produce.
• Team Coordination: A manager is often responsible for helping their client assemble their team, including finding the right agent and publicist.
• General Counsel: Serving as a trusted confidant and providing advice on a wide range of professional and sometimes personal matters.

A manager typically has a much smaller roster of clients than an agent, allowing for a more focused and hands-on relationship. For this more intensive level of involvement, they are compensated with a commission of 15% to 20% of their client’s earnings, which is paid in addition to the agent’s 10% fee.
