OCF, or Original Camera Files, refers to the raw, unaltered footage directly recorded by the camera before any color correction or transcoding has been applied.

The Digital Negative

In the world of digital cinematography, the OCF is the equivalent of the original film negative. It is the most pristine and valuable digital asset created during production. These files are the ‘source of truth,’ containing the complete, raw data captured by the camera’s sensor with the maximum possible color information, dynamic range, and resolution. The OCF is not just a video file; it is a container of pure sensor data that offers the greatest flexibility in post-production for color grading, visual effects, and mastering.

The OCF Workflow

The OCF is the starting point for the entire post-production pipeline, but it is rarely used directly in the edit.

  1. Capture and Offload: On set, the camera records the OCF to its media cards (e.g., CFast cards, RED Mini-Mags). A Data Wrangler or DIT then offloads these files, using checksum verification to ensure a perfect copy.
  2. Backup: The OCF is immediately backed up to multiple hard drives, following a strict backup protocol (such as the 3-2-1 rule), and then securely transported to the post-production facility.
  3. Proxy Generation: Because OCF files are enormous and processor-intensive, they are used to generate smaller, lower-resolution ‘proxy’ files. The film editor works with these lightweight proxies.
  4. Conforming: After the edit is finalized, the editing software uses an Edit Decision List (EDL) to link the approved cut back to the original, high-quality OCF. This ‘conforming’ process re-creates the final edit using the pristine source files, which are then used for color grading, VFX, and final delivery.

Common OCF formats include proprietary raw codecs like ARRIRAW, REDCODE RAW (.R3D), Sony X-OCN, and Blackmagic RAW (.BRAW). The absolute protection and archival of the OCF is the highest priority of on-set data management.
