OCIO Config: Overview
An OCIO Config is a YAML-formatted configuration file used by OpenColorIO (OCIO), an open-source color management system. It defines the color spaces, transforms, display devices, and viewing pipelines for consistent color reproduction across applications and render engines.
Structure and Components
An OCIO Config lists named color spaces (e.g., ACEScg, sRGB), each with its transform to a reference space. It also defines roles (scene_linear, raw), looks (creative grades), and displays with view transforms for SDR and HDR outputs. Transforms include CDL (color decision list), matrix, log, and LUT-based operations.
Usage in Production
Artists and facilities load the OCIO Config into DCC tools (Nuke, Maya, DaVinci Resolve) and renderers to ensure that all viewers interpret imagery identically. By centralizing color definitions, OCIO prevents mismatches between applications, streamlines cross-department collaboration, and simplifies pipeline updates when standards evolve.
