Rear projection is one of the oldest and most recognizable in-camera visual effects techniques. The setup involves actors performing on a soundstage in front of a large, translucent screen. From behind this screen, a powerful projector displays a pre-filmed background plate—such as moving scenery for a car ride or a dramatic city skyline. The camera, positioned in front of the actors, captures both the live performance and the projected background simultaneously in a single, composite shot. This allowed filmmakers to create the illusion of being on location without ever leaving the controlled environment of the studio.
Rear projection is inextricably linked with the Golden Age of Hollywood. It was the standard method for filming any scene set within a moving vehicle. Countless classic films feature actors sitting in a stationary prop car, turning a fake steering wheel while footage of the road unreels behind them. This was not only cheaper and safer than filming on a real moving vehicle, but it also gave directors greater control over lighting and sound recording, which was notoriously difficult on location with the cumbersome equipment of the era. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of the technique, using it extensively in films like North by Northwest and Vertigo.
Despite its widespread use, rear projection had several distinct visual drawbacks that made it fall out of favor with the advent of more advanced techniques like blue screen and front projection:
