The Final Polish

Finishing is the umbrella term for the final, highly technical phase of a film’s post-production journey. This stage begins after the creative edit has been “locked,” meaning no more changes will be made to the sequence or timing of the shots. The goal of finishing is to take the conformed, high-resolution online cut and bring every element of the film—visuals, sound, effects, and titles—to its highest possible quality, combining them into the definitive, ready-for-distribution version.

This is a collaborative and meticulous process involving several specialized departments, all working from the locked cut as their common blueprint.

The Key Components of Finishing

The finishing process integrates the work of several distinct post-production pipelines:

• Online Editing / Conforming: The high-resolution picture is assembled, forming the backbone of the project.
• Color Grading: The final color correction and creative grade are applied to the conformed picture, setting the film’s final look and mood.
• Visual Effects (VFX): The final, completed visual effects shots are delivered by the VFX vendors and are seamlessly integrated into the timeline, replacing any temporary placeholders.
• Sound Design and Mixing: The final, mixed soundtrack—including dialogue, ADR, Foley, sound effects, and the musical score—is delivered from the sound department and married to the picture.
• Titles and Graphics: The opening title sequence, closing credits, and any on-screen text (subtitles, location cards) are created by a graphic designer and added to the film.

The culmination of the finishing process is the creation of the Digital Cinema Distribution Master (DCDM). This is the uncompressed, ultra-high-quality master version of the film, from which all subsequent copies, or “deliverables,” will be made for distribution to theaters, streaming services, and home media.
