A Bridge Between Worlds

The medium is a specific and crucial archetype within the supernatural horror and thriller genres. While related to the broader psychic archetype, the medium’s abilities are focused exclusively on the realm of the dead. They can see, hear, and speak to ghosts, spirits, and other spectral entities. Their primary narrative function is to act as an interpreter and a conduit, bridging the gap between the terrified living protagonists and the often-vengeful spirits that haunt them.

A haunting is essentially a mystery, and the medium is the detective who can interview the primary witness: the ghost itself. Through séances, trances, or direct conversation, the medium is able to uncover the spirit’s backstory—who they were, how they died, and what unresolved trauma or injustice is tying them to a particular place. This exposition is vital to the plot, as it provides the heroes with the information they need to appease the spirit, solve the original crime, or find a way to defeat it. The medium’s abilities are the key that unlocks the mystery of the haunting.

The Gift as a Burden

Like other psychic characters, the medium’s gift is almost always portrayed as a heavy burden.

• The Genuine Empath: This is the medium who is truly and unwillingly connected to the spirit world. They are not performers; they are sensitive souls who are constantly bombarded by the pain and sorrow of the dead. Their ability is a source of fear and isolation. Cole Sear in The Sixth Sense (1999) is the definitive example, a terrified young boy who whispers the iconic line, ‘I see dead people.’ His journey is about learning to use his frightening ability to help both the living and the dead find peace.
• The Eccentric Exorcist: This medium is a more confident and often flamboyant professional who specializes in ‘cleaning’ haunted houses. They are the expert called in when the haunting becomes violent and unmanageable. Tangina Barrons in Poltergeist (1982) is a memorable example, a diminutive but spiritually powerful medium who directly confronts the evil entity. Elise Rainier from the Insidious series has become a modern icon of this type.
• The Charlatan: A common subversion of the archetype is the fake medium, a con artist who uses parlor tricks to prey on the grieving. Their story typically takes a terrifying turn when they are confronted with a genuine haunting, forcing them to face a power that is very real and far beyond their control.
