The immortal wanderer is a deeply romantic and melancholic archetype found in fantasy, science fiction, and gothic literature. This character has been granted (or cursed with) eternal life and is destined to walk the Earth forever. Their defining characteristic is a profound sense of loneliness and alienation. While humanity lives and dies in the blink of an eye, the immortal endures. They are the ultimate outsider, unable to form lasting bonds for fear of the inevitable pain of outliving everyone they love. The story of the immortal wanderer is almost always one of loss. Flashbacks are a common narrative device, showing the character in different historical eras, falling in love, and then losing that love to the passage of time. Their journey is often a search for meaning in a life without end, or, in many cases, a search for a way to finally become mortal. Figures of Eternal Life in Film
Cinema has been fascinated with the existential plight of the immortal, creating many memorable wanderers.
- The Highlander: The film Highlander (1986) and its subsequent series are built entirely around this archetype. It posits a race of immortals who can only be killed by decapitation, living in secret among humans and engaging in a centuries-long game to win ‘The Prize.’ The protagonist, Connor MacLeod, is a tragic figure, haunted by the memory of his mortal wife who grew old and died while he remained young.
- Vampires as Wanderers: The classic vampire archetype, particularly as envisioned by Anne Rice in Interview with the Vampire (1994), is a form of the immortal wanderer. Louis de Pointe du Lac is a reluctant, melancholic immortal who spends centuries grappling with the moral and existential torment of his existence.
- The Benevolent Observer: Some immortals are less tormented and more philosophical. In the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, the character of Hob Gadling is a 14th-century man who is granted immortality simply to see what it’s like. His story, told through meetings with the protagonist once every hundred years, provides a moving and ultimately optimistic chronicle of the human experience.
