Standardised by early Hollywood so that intertitles could be read yet actors’ gestures remained visible, the medium shot (MS) quickly became cinematic lingua franca. It represents a compromise between the intimacy of a close-up and the expository breadth of a wide shot, making it perfect for shot–reverse-shot conversation patterns.

Medium Shot: Technical Traits

Typically framed between 35 mm and 50 mm on full-frame sensors, the MS avoids distortion and maintains moderate background context. Variants include medium-close-up (chest up) and American shot (knees up), each carrying subtle narrative weight.

Critiques and Creative Subversions

Because it is so ubiquitous, some directors deliberately shun the MS—Andrea Arnold shoots extreme close-ups; Nuri Bilge Ceylan lingers in tableau longs. Yet when Steven Soderbergh used iPhones for Unsane, the humble MS rescued handheld scenes from chaos.
