A fan dub is a piece of media that has been unofficially re-dubbed by fans. This process involves taking the original video from a film or show, muting or removing the original dialogue track, and recording a new one. Fan dubs are created for a variety of reasons and exist in several distinct forms, from earnest translations to comedic parodies.

This practice is a form of transformative work, where fans actively participate with and alter the source material to create a new piece of content. It is a cornerstone of participatory fan culture, particularly within the anime community.

Types of Fan Dubs

• Literal Translation Dubs: In the early days of online anime fandom, long before streaming services provided official, simultaneous global releases, fan dubs were often created out of a desire for accessibility. If a show was available in Japan but had not been licensed for an official English release, a group of bilingual fans might translate the script and record their own English-language dub to share with a community that would otherwise have no way to understand the story.
• Comedic and Abridged Dubs: This is the most popular and culturally significant form of the modern fan dub. In this style, the goal is not to translate, but to parody. Creators write an entirely new, comedic script that re-contextualizes the original footage. The most famous subgenre of this is the “Abridged Series,” pioneered by Martin “LittleKuriboh” Schemmel with Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series. These series condense an entire show into a handful of fast-paced, joke-filled episodes, often satirizing the original’s plot holes, character tropes, and animation quirks. These comedic fan dubs have become a major art form in their own right within online fan culture.

While fan dubs exist in a legal gray area regarding copyright, their transformative and often parodic nature has allowed them to thrive as a key part of how modern audiences engage with and celebrate the media they love.
