The Sound of Modern Japan

J-Pop encompasses a vast range of musical styles that have dominated the Japanese music charts since the 1990s, including pop, rock, dance, and R&B. While it includes idol groups similar to those in K-Pop, the term also broadly covers solo artists and bands. Historically, the J-Pop industry has been primarily focused on its enormous and robust domestic market, in contrast to K-Pop’s more recent strategy of aggressive global promotion.

The most significant global impact of J-Pop, however, is its deep and symbiotic relationship with another one of Japan’s major cultural exports: anime.

J-Pop’s Crucial Role in Anime

J-Pop music is an inseparable part of the anime experience. The opening (OP) and ending (ED) theme songs of an anime series or film are a primary showcase for J-Pop artists, and these songs often become defining elements of the show’s identity.

• Theme Songs as Chart Hits: A catchy theme song for a massively popular anime can become a huge mainstream hit in Japan and a beloved anthem for anime fans worldwide. The success of songs from blockbuster anime films like Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name. (by the band Radwimps) or the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train (with its theme ‘Homura’ by LiSA) demonstrates this powerful connection.

• ‘Anison’ Subgenre: The relationship is so strong that it has spawned its own dedicated subgenre of music known as Anison (a portmanteau of ‘Anime Song’). Many artists and vocalists build their entire careers around creating music specifically for anime productions.

Beyond anime, J-Pop is also a staple in the soundtracks for Japanese live-action films and popular television dramas (dorama), where the theme song often becomes as famous as the show itself.
