The Blueprint for a Joke
A meme template is the foundational, blank-slate version of a meme. It is the core image or set of images that provides the visual context and the underlying rules of a joke format, which can then be used and reused by countless people with their own captions and variations. The template is the blueprint; the final meme with text is the finished structure. This reusability is the engine of internet meme culture, allowing for rapid creation and dissemination of humor.
Movies and television are an inexhaustible mine for meme templates. A single, expressive screenshot can be stripped of its original context and become a universally understood template for a specific emotion or situation. The process often involves:
- Identification: A user identifies a screenshot from a film that has a strong, relatable emotional core (e.g., confusion, realization, judgment).
- Decontextualization: The image is removed from the specific plot of the movie.
- Application: Users begin applying the image to new, everyday situations, creating a new, shared meaning for the image.
Famous examples of film-sourced templates include the “Distracted Boyfriend” format (which is often adapted by photoshopping movie characters’ heads onto the original people), the “Is this a pigeon?” template for misidentification, and the image macro of Boromir for the “One Does Not Simply…” meme.
