Breaking the ‘Build and Burn’ Cycle

Historically, set construction in the film industry has followed a linear, wasteful model often called ‘build and burn.’ Sets are constructed from raw materials, used for the duration of the shoot, and then demolished and hauled to a landfill. This process generates tons of waste wood, foam, paint, and plastics from a single production.

A closed-loop set fundamentally redesigns this process by applying the principles of a circular economy. The goal is to ‘close the loop’ on the material lifecycle, ensuring that what is built does not become waste. The mantra is Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle.

The Three Pillars of a Closed-Loop Set

Achieving a closed-loop system requires planning and collaboration, primarily from the art and construction departments, from the earliest stages of pre-production.

  1. Design for Disassembly: Sets are intentionally designed and built in a modular fashion. Construction crews prioritize using screws and bolts over adhesives and glues. This allows set walls (flats), platforms, and other structural elements to be easily and non-destructively taken apart once filming is complete.
  2. Prioritize Reuse and Donation: The primary goal is to find a second life for the set materials. Large studios maintain ‘stock’ warehouses where they store set pieces to be reused in future productions. For independent films, a ‘deconstruction plan’ is made in advance. After the set is struck, its components are donated to other creative organizations, such as local community theaters, school drama departments, or other independent films. This not only prevents waste but also supports the local arts community.
  3. Responsible Material Choice and Recycling: The process begins with sourcing sustainable materials, like lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints. Any materials that absolutely cannot be reused are meticulously sorted and sent to the appropriate recycling facilities. The ultimate goal is to send as close to zero waste to landfill as possible.
