The Hub of Virtual Production

In the fast-paced and technologically dense environment of an In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) shoot, the ‘Brain Bar’ is the central nervous system. It is a dedicated area, typically positioned just off the main LED stage, that houses a team of specialized operators and their computer workstations. This team is responsible for the live management, manipulation, and troubleshooting of the entire virtual production pipeline.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Brain Bar is a highly collaborative space, home to a new generation of on-set roles:

• Unreal Engine / Real-Time Engine Artists: These operators are ‘inside’ the 3D world. They can move digital assets, change lighting, trigger effects, and alter the environment in real-time based on the creative requests of the Director and Director of Photography.
• VFX Supervisor: Oversees the entire process, ensuring the digital and physical elements are integrating seamlessly.
• Media Server Operators (e.g., Disguise): Manage the powerful servers that calibrate and play back the content across the entire LED Volume.
• Camera Tracking Specialists: Monitor the performance of the camera tracking system (e.g., Mo-Sys or OptiTrack) to ensure perfect synchronization between the real and virtual cameras.

From the Brain Bar, the team can change a sunny day to a stormy night, move a mountain, or adjust the color of the sky with a few clicks, giving filmmakers an unprecedented level of creative control live on set.
