What Is Lucifer About?

The premise of Lucifer in 275 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the labyrinthine world of Kerala politics, where public duty and private ambition collide, a mysterious figure named Stephen Nedumpally commands attention. Known by some as Lucifer, he occupies a unique space within the Indian Union Front, revered for his loyalty to the party’s established leader yet feared for the shadows that seem to follow his every move. The film establishes him as a man of contradictions, operating in the murky intersection of governance and darker, unspoken dealings.

The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of political succession, where the sudden absence of a powerful leader creates a vacuum that draws in a diverse cast of claimants. Family members, party loyalists, and rival factions each harbor their own visions for the future, their personal histories entangled with the state’s turbulent present. Among them stand individuals with connections to international networks and clandestine operations, hinting at a world where local politics reaches far beyond state borders.

Stephen’s character is defined by an air of enigma and quiet intensity. His relationships are marked by unspoken tensions and hidden depths, suggesting a man whose true nature remains obscured even to those closest to him. The film explores how power can be both a shield and a weapon, and how the lines between protector and predator often blur in the pursuit of control.

With a visual palette that contrasts the ornate settings of political theater with the gritty realities of shadow operations, Lucifer crafts an atmospheric thriller steeped in moral ambiguity. The tone is one of simmering tension, where every alliance carries risk and every silence speaks volumes, inviting viewers into a world where nothing is quite as it seems.

Spoilers ahead

The story begins at the high-security headquarters of Interpol in Lyon, where officer Robert McCarthy is meticulously reviewing intelligence reports regarding the Khureshi Ab’raam nexus. This organization is described as a notorious and shadowy secret society that maintains a stranglehold on global trade. A critical communication from the CIA establishes a direct link between this syndicate and various African warlords, accompanied by a surveillance photograph captured in Istanbul back in April 2006. Upon analyzing the image, McCarthy realizes the gravity of the situation and identifies the mysterious figure in the photo as the elusive Khureshi Ab’raam.

Meanwhile, in Kerala, a political storm erupts following the death of Chief Minister P. K. Ramdas, commonly known as PKR, the leader of the Indian Union Front (IUF). His passing occurs while he is receiving treatment at a hospital owned by the daughter of an opposition leader. Seizing this moment of instability, Acting Chief Minister Mahesha Varma deliberately incites public unrest outside the hospital to destabilize the environment ahead of the upcoming elections. In the midst of this turmoil, an activist named Govardhan begins livestreaming provocative accusations, claiming that PKR had essentially become a puppet for a powerful financial syndicate that dictates the course of Indian politics. Govardhan identifies five primary candidates who could succeed PKR: Priyadarshini “Priya” Ramdas, Jathin Ramdas, Bimal “Bobby” Nair, Mahesha Varma, and the most enigmatic of them all, Stephen Nedumpally, whom Govardhan warns is the most dangerous individual in the group, referring to him as Lucifer.

Priya and Jathin are the children of the deceased PKR. Priya is married to Bobby, a man who presents a respectable facade but is secretly a ruthless drug lord involved in high-stakes real estate, Hawala financial operations, and large-scale narcotics trafficking—crimes of which Priya is completely unaware. In contrast, Stephen Nedumpally is a mysterious ally who enjoyed immense trust from PKR. His background is clouded in secrecy, with known ties to post-war reconstruction efforts in both Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as an operation involving the smuggling of gold from Dubai into Kerala. Govardhan openly questions the logic behind why PKR placed such absolute trust in a man like Stephen.

Following the death of PKR, Bobby orchestrates a plan to seize total control of the IUF by funding the party with his illegal drug money. To achieve this, he partners with an associate named Abdul and a formidable international drug kingpin named Fyodor. Together, they arrange a deal to flood the state of Kerala with narcotics in exchange for political immunity and protection. Stephen, however, stands firmly against this plan and threatens Bobby, which prompts Bobby to launch a vicious smear campaign against him using NPTV, a news channel backed by the IUF. Govardhan aids this conflict by providing evidence of Bobby’s criminal activities and alleging that the Khureshi Ab’raam nexus is backing the financier Manappattil Chandy. In a fit of retaliation, Bobby has Govardhan abducted. Furthermore, Stephen uses violence to prevent Bobby’s operatives from utilizing a sealed timber factory as a production hub for drugs.

Bobby then employs a mole named Aloshy, who manipulates a young orphan named Aparna into making a false accusation, claiming that Stephen committed sexual abuse at his shelter, Ashrayam. This leads to widespread public outrage and the subsequent arrest of Stephen. While behind bars, Stephen maintains his influence by contacting his fiercely loyal deputy, Zayed Masood, who commands an international mercenary force. Zayed executes a series of sabotages against Fyodor’s drug shipments, effectively squeezing Bobby until he is forced to secure Stephen’s release from prison.

As the plot thickens, Priya discovers the horrifying truth: Bobby has abused her daughter, Jhanvi, and was the architect behind the deaths of both Jayadevan and PKR. In a state of desperation, she turns to Stephen for protection. Stephen’s forces eliminate the corrupt commissioner Mayilvahanam, and with Stephen’s help, Priya manages to seize control of NPTV. The truth eventually comes to light when Aparna publicly confesses that her allegations against Stephen were fabricated. In a decisive press conference, Priya and Jathin expose the full extent of Bobby’s criminal empire to the public.

The climax sees Bobby captured in Mumbai by Fyodor’s men, but Zayed rescues him specifically so that Stephen can personally execute him. It is revealed that Murugan was actually Stephen’s spy, and he proceeds to kill Aloshy. With the villains defeated, Govardhan is freed and reunited with his family, and Jathin ascends to the position of the new Chief Minister.

In a final post-credits scene, Stephen meets with Zayed at a secret location in Russia. While taking a call from a gold smuggler named Sanghani, Stephen reveals the shocking truth that he himself is the legendary Khureshi Ab’raam. This confirmation proves that Stephen has been the mastermind controlling the powerful secret societies that influence the world from the shadows.
