The Abandoned 2007

A Russian peasant family gathers for dinner when an old, dilapidated truck suddenly halts in their yard. The father discovers a deceased woman, evidently a murder victim, alongside her two crying infants. Fast forward 40 years, we meet Marie Jones, summoned back to Russia by a notary who claims he has unearthed her long-lost parents and their old home. As she approaches the notary’s office, she has a brief encounter with someone but dismisses it.

Upon meeting the notary, who tells her that there are no surviving heirs, Marie sets off to reclaim her family’s house. Upon arriving at the site where her mother perished, she has an unexpected confrontation with an elderly woman who insists, in Russian, that Marie should not go to the Kardinovsky Farm. This encounter is interrupted by Anitoly, her reluctant guide willing to traverse the dangerous path to the farm at night.

The farm is nestled on an “island,” encircled by a river and reachable only by a bridge. After a considerable drive, they cross the bridge and halt near the house. Anitoly instructs Marie to stay back while he scouts the area for any lurking animals. Alone with her thoughts, Marie hesitantly descends from the truck, only to find herself isolated: the truck dies mysteriously, leaving her enveloped in eerie silence.

With nowhere left to turn, she ventures inside the decrepit house armed with just a flashlight. As she explores the dimly lit rooms, a loud bang followed by a child’s cry compels her to dash upstairs, only to find… nothing. In the nursery, she spots a woman darting past the doorway and impulsively chases after her, only to scream in terror as she confronts her doppelganger, drenched and eerie.

In her panic, Marie bolts outside, hoping to catch the departing Anitoly, but stumbles down a hill into the river, floundering as she cannot swim. She regains consciousness in a brighter room, encountering Nikolai who is rummaging through her belongings. After a brief scuffle where Marie defiantly strikes him with a log, he claims to be her brother, also summoned by the notary. Skeptical but curious, Marie follows him upstairs and discovers their old cribs, confirming his connection.

Nikolai shares a chilling revelation about seeing one’s double revealing how they will meet their end. Just then, they both come face to face with a nightmarish version of Nikolai’s doppelganger, a mutilated corpse, prompting them to realize they must escape the house at once. Their frantic preparations are disrupted when Nikolai falls through a floorboard, vanishing before her eyes, leaving Marie to fend for herself.

Determined to uncover the truth, she returns upstairs and witnesses a harrowing vision of the past: her father brutally murdering her mother on their bed. Overcome with terror, she turns to find her doppelganger again, this time experiencing a life-draining encounter that leaves her gasping for breath. As she rushes out of the house, she discovers a boat by the river and bravely rows across, leaving her ominous double behind. However, fate has other plans as she finds herself confronting the house once more.

Upon re-entering, she realizes the dining room is eerily pristine, reminiscent of decades long gone. Injured Nikolai, who only fell into the basement, shares his insight—neither of them was meant to escape the house, and on the eve of their birthday, destiny has called them back to confront their tragic past at the stroke of midnight.

As the clock strikes twelve, the house reverts to its 1966 state. The chilling sound of their father’s return sends Marie into a frenzy, desperate to alter the past. But Nikolai cautions her that it’s too late; their only chance of survival lies in abandoning the house as it can no longer reach them. As they devise their escape, they are torn apart, with Marie chased back to her father driving the truck, while Nikolai is confronted by the ghostly form of his lost love, Natalie.

Marie witnesses her father leave one baby to the pigs and attempts to drown the other. Just as her mother—thought dead—arrives and shoots her father, chaos continues to ensue. As Marie rushes for safety, she is thrust into a horrific realization: the notary is intertwined with her father’s past, having returned from death to ensnare his children into his dark legacy.

In a frenzied escape, she finds herself in the present, stumbling upon her past self as she desperately races towards the light. Moving between realities, she encounters her father’s apparition, who professes his love while reminding her of their unbreakable bond. But as she flees, the gruesome vision of Nikolai’s demise haunts her, leading her back to the truck in a desperate bid for freedom.

Her father’s voice crackles over the radio, inviting her back into their twisted familial embrace and promising to take care of her daughter, Emily, who remains in the States. Yet it is too late; the bridge that brought her to this torment has been obliterated. As Marie plunges into the depths of the lake, drowning fulfills the dreadful prophecy.

The film concludes with Marie’s daughter narrating the aftermath, revealing her resigned understanding that her mother would never return. Months of silence pass since Marie’s departure for Russia, a poignant disconnect forged that leaves her feeling abandoned, forever breaking the cycle of despair.
