Thomas Gomez, born Sabino Tomás Gómez on July 10, 1905 in New York City, was a pioneering American actor whose career spanned nearly five decades across stage, screen, and television. His father, Sabino Tomás Gómez, descended from Gibraltar and Santander, Spain, while his mother brought French‑Irish roots from Alsace and County Cork, giving Gomez a richly multicultural heritage that informed his nuanced performances. He entered the world of acting in 1923, studying under the respected actor Walter Hampden in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac in Syracuse, New York, and quickly proved his talent in a variety of regional theater companies. By the early 1940s he transitioned to film, making his cinematic debut in Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942), and would go on to appear in more than sixty feature films over the next three decades.

Gomez made history in 1947 when he became the first Spanish‑American nominee for an Academy Award, earning a nod for his compelling turn in Ride the Pink Horse. His filmography includes memorable roles in classics such as Who Done It? (1942), Key Largo (1948), Force of Evil (1948), The Conqueror (1956), and his final screen appearance in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). A versatile performer, he also became a familiar face on television, guest‑starring in series like The Twilight Zone, Route 66, Dr. Kildare, Mr. Ed, Burke's Law, The Virginian, It Takes a Thief, Bewitched, The Rifleman, and Gunsmoke. On Broadway he earned critical acclaim for roles in A Man for All Seasons, the short‑run The Flowers of Virtue, and as Big Daddy in the original production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (replacing Burl Ives in 1956). His life was cut short after a car accident left him in a coma; he died at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California on June 18, 1971, and was laid to rest at Westwood Memorial Park.
