The Adventures of Hajji Baba 1954

In the Persian city of Ispahan, a barber named Hajji Baba John Derek leaves his father’s shop in search of a great fortune, stirring a sense of possibility and change in the bustling streets around him. At the same time, Princess Fakzia Elaine Stewart presses her father, the Caliph Donald Randolph, to permit a union with Nur-El-Din Paul Picerni, a prince renowned far and wide. The Caliph, wary of weak alliances, intends for Fakzia to wed a trusted ally instead, and starts arranging her voyage to the prince. But a courier delivers news from Nur-El-Din that an escort waits for Fakzia on the city’s outskirts, and she frantically escapes the palace while disguised as a boy, slipping into the shadows of the caravan routes.

Hajji Baba crosses paths with the escort-warrior at the rendezvous point, is assaulted, and then repurposes his barber’s tools to overwhelm the escort. When Fakzia arrives, she mistakes Hajji for the escort, while Hajji himself misreads the emerald ring Nur-El-Din sent as the prize to be delivered. In a tense moment of misrecognition, Fakzia’s turban comes loose, and Hajji realizes that the girl herself—more than any token—could hold the key to Nur-El-Din’s desire. The pair’s budding alliance grows as they agree to travel together, and their journey leads them to a lively caravan led by Osman Aga [Thomas Gomez], who invites them to stay for a night of music and dancing among a chorus of performers, including the radiant Ayesha [Rosemarie Stack].

What begins as a perilous escape gradually becomes a fragile alliance built on shared danger and mutual curiosity. As Fakzia and Hajji travel deeper into a world of shifting loyalties, they find themselves pursued not only by the Caliph’s guards, who are sent to bring Fakzia back to royal duty, but also by the threatening, windswept reach of a Turcoman force. The invading women—bold, formidable, and alluring—cut through the caravan routes with a fierce confidence, preying on unsuspecting merchants and redefining the balance of power in the desert trade networks. In this collision of royalty, commerce, and untamed frontier courage, Fakzia and Hajji must decide whom to trust, what it means to be fortune’s chosen, and how love can emerge in a landscape where danger lurks behind every dune. Their journey unfolds as a tapestry of color, danger, humor, and allure, inviting the audience to witness how a chance encounter can forge an unexpected bond that neither time nor fate can easily erase.
