Eugenia Paul, born Eugenia Popoff on March 3, 1935, in Dearborn, Michigan, was an American actress and dancer of Russian heritage whose career spanned both television and film during the golden age of Hollywood entertainment. She was the daughter of Frederick K. Popoff, who worked for the Ford Motor Company, and Monica Popoff, a former concert violinist who later taught piano and violin. Paul grew up with three brothers—one older and two younger—and her grandfather served as a priest at a Russian Orthodox church in Chicago, deeply embedding her family's cultural and religious traditions into her upbringing. Initially aspiring to become a ballet dancer, Paul received an invitation at the age of 14 to join the prestigious Ballet Theater company, but her mother insisted that she prioritize her education, postponing her professional ambitions. By the time she was 17 years old, she had signed as a dancer with Warner Bros. while participating in a tour with the American Ballet Theatre and performing on the Ballet Sketchbook television show, where she quickly rose to lead roles on screen. Paul further honed her craft by studying ballet under the legendary Bronislava Nijinska and studying drama and acting under the renowned Michael Chekhov technique. In 1955, she transitioned from Warner Bros. to 20th Century Fox as an actor, and her television debut followed the year prior with an episode of Cavalcade of America in 1954. Her television credits are extensive, including appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Medic, The Lone Ranger, Death Valley Days, The Adventures of Jim Bowie, the Playhouse 90 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and Sky King. She is perhaps best remembered for her starring role as Elena Torres in the ABC television series Zorro. Her film credits included notable appearances in Lost in Alaska, Man on the Prowl, Apache Warrior, and the epic Cecil B. DeMille production The Ten Commandments, with her last feature film role being in the western Gunfighters of Abilene in 1960. Beyond film and television, Paul appeared on radio programs such as Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and Hall of Fame, showcasing her versatility across multiple entertainment mediums. In her personal life, she met Robert Strauss, the Pep Boys heir, at a Hollywood Bowl party, and the couple married on November 30, 1958, after which she retired from professional show business to focus on family life. Together, they had three children—two daughters and a son—and remained happily married for 52 years until her passing. Paul died of complications from edema on May 24, 2010, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy as a talented performer of mid-20th century American entertainment.
