Stephen Harold Tobolowsky, born May 30, 1951, is an acclaimed American character actor revered for his roles in notable films such as the insurance agent Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day and the amnesiac Sammy Jankis in Memento. His television prominence extends to a variety of characters including Commissioner Hugo Jarry in Deadwood, Bob Bishop in Heroes, Sandy Ryerson in Glee, Stu Beggs in Californication and White Famous, "Action" Jack Barker in Silicon Valley, Dr. Leslie Berkowitz in One Day at a Time, Principal Earl Ball in The Goldbergs, and Dr. Schulman in The Mindy Project. He is also a writer, hosting a monthly audio podcast, The Tobolowsky Files, which showcases autobiographical stories of his acting and personal life. He's authored three books, The Dangerous Animals Club, Cautionary Tales, and My Adventures with God. Stephen was born in Dallas, Texas and showed early talent in baseball before a childhood illness ended his athletic dreams. He moved onto theatre and graduated from Justin F. Kimball High School and Southern Methodist University, later acquiring a master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1975. Aside from acting, he also directed plays in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and even co-wrote the film True Stories. His podcast, The Tobolowsky Files debuted in 2009 and was picked up by Public Radio International in 2012. Throughout his career, he has starred in over 200 films and numerous television projects.
