On the bustling streets of New York, Duffy Bergman [Gene Wilder] is a dedicated cartoonist whose days revolve around his art and his marriage to the ambitious gourmet chef Meg Lloyd [Christine Lahti]. Meg dreams of opening her own restaurant and starting a family, while Duffy initially agrees to postpone parenthood, hoping to give their careers room to grow. After a stretch of unsuccessful attempts to conceive, he urges Meg to focus on her career and revisit the baby issue later. The couple’s plans begin to diverge, and the tension between career ambitions and family life starts to pull them apart.

When his mother passes away, Duffy’s longing for a child returns with renewed urgency, deepening his fixation just as Meg remains absorbed in her growing culinary dream. The strain between them intensifies, and their previously shared life frays into a separation. The sense of time passing—and the sense that life is slipping by—casts a quiet shadow over Duffy’s decisions and Meg’s evolving goals.

Seeking perspective, Duffy travels to Arizona to speak at a Delta Gamma sorority convention. There, he confesses that the Delta Gammas have always felt like his dream girls—his own Love Goddesses. It is at this event that he meets the much younger Daphne Delillo [Mary Stuart Masterson], a network sports reporter who soon relocates to New York. Their initial attraction grows into a relationship, and Daphne becomes pregnant. Duffy is happy at the prospect of fatherhood, but he is unsettled by how quickly their romance is moving, and he worries about the pace of their future together.

Tragedy strikes when Daphne suffers a miscarriage, and she ultimately ends the relationship, convinced that they were pursuing the baby more than a shared future. Back in his own orbit, Duffy attends his father’s wedding and learns news about Meg that compels him to return to her world and the restaurant she’s building. He seeks reconciliation, insisting that happiness for him would come from being with Meg, even if they never have a child together. The final twist arrives when Duffy discovers that Meg has adopted a baby boy, a development that reshapes the sense of family he thought he understood and offers a new horizon for both of them.
