Rolfe Sedan, born Edward Sedan on January 20, 1896 in New York City, was a prolific American character actor whose career spanned more than six decades, making him a familiar face in Hollywood’s golden era despite rarely receiving top‑billing. The son of a Broadway fashion designer mother and an orchestra conductor father, Sedan entered the entertainment world through vaudeville and nightclub performances before transitioning to the stage, debuting on Broadway in 1916 and appearing in his first motion picture for Metro Pictures in 1921. Over the next decades he became renowned for playing tiny but memorable bit parts—clerks, conductors, postmen, cooks, and other everyday figures—often uncredited, yet essential to the texture of classic films. Audiences might recognize him as the hotel manager in Ninotchka (1939) starring Greta Garbo, as the balloon ascensionist in The Wizard of Oz (1939), or as the train conductor in Young Frankenstein (1974), but his résumé includes countless other fleeting roles across genres, from Marx Brothers comedies like Monkey Business (1931) to lavish musicals such as Silk Stockings (1957). Beyond the silver screen, Sedan found steady work on television during the 1950s and 1960s, portraying recurring mail‑carrier characters on The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show and The Addams Family, and even a chef on an episode of I Love Lucy.
