What Is Stingaree About?

Hilda, a servant for the wealthy Clarksons and aspiring singer, hopes to impress the visiting composer Sir Julian. Jealous Mrs. Clarkson tries to silence her, sending Hilda away. Meanwhile outlaw Stingaree kidnaps Sir Julian, impersonates him at the Clarksons, and meets Hilda just before she departs, leading to a daring confrontation.

In 1874 Australia, the frontier town hums with a rush of fear and fascination as the famed outlaw Stingaree [Richard Dix] slips back into the region, stirring rumors of bold crime and daring legend. Newly installed Police Inspector Radford [George Barraud] proclaims his mission with a mixture of certainty and bravado, boasting to wealthy Hugh Clarkson [Henry Stephenson] that he will capture Stingaree and restore order to the quiet, sunburnt streets. The town’s social fabric centers on the Clarksons: Mr. Clarkson [Henry Stephenson] is a kind, generous man whose warmth sits uneasily beside the sharper edge of his wife, Mrs. Clarkson [Mary Boland], who treats Hilda Bouverie [Irene Dunne], an impoverished servant, and Annie [Una O’Connor], another loyal helper, as little more than instruments of daily labor.
