Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez (born Ramiro Gonzalez‑Gonzalez; May 24, 1925 – February 6, 2006) was an American character actor and comedian whose career spanned the golden age of westerns and television. Born in Aguilares, Texas, he grew up in a musical family—his father a trumpet player and his mother a dancer—while his older brother Jose pursued acting as well. He left school at seven to join the family act “Las Perlitas,” touring the Southwest and leaving him functionally illiterate for life, a circumstance that forced him to rely on his wife Leandra to read scripts aloud. After serving as a driver in the United States Army during World II, Gonzalez Gonzalez returned to entertainment, performing stand‑up comedy for Spanish‑speaking audiences and gaining national attention on Groucho Marx’s You Bet Your Life in 1953. His witty banter—most memorably when Marx asked what the “G” stood for and Pedro answered “Gonzalez”—caught the eye of John Wayne, who cast him in several iconic films such as The High and the Mighty, Rio Bravo, and Hellfighters, where he provided beloved comic relief. In addition to film, he appeared on television series like Gunsmoke, The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, and I Dream of Jeannie, and lent his voice to Warner Bros. cartoons featuring Speedy Gonzales, often billed simply as Gonzalez Gonzalez. Despite his popularity, his roles were later critiqued for reinforcing negative Hispanic stereotypes; yet fellow Latino actor Edward James Olmos praised him, stating that Pedro “inspired every Latino actor.” He died of natural causes in Culver City, California, at age 80, survived by his wife Leandra, three children, and his grandson, actor Clifton Collins Jr., leaving a complex legacy of humor, representation, and cultural impact.
