Paulette Goddard: Movies & Box Office

Paulette Goddard, born Marion Levy, was an acclaimed American actress and socialite whose career spanned over six decades from the 1920s to the 1970s. She was a leading name during Hollywood's Golden Age. Born in New York and raised in Kansas City, she began her career as a child fashion model, later performing in several Broadway productions as a Ziegfeld Girl. In the early 1930s, she moved to Hollywood where she gained recognition as a romantic partner of comedian Charlie Chaplin, appearing in Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940). After signing with Paramount Pictures, she became one of the studio's biggest stars with roles in acclaimed films. She was known for her independence and strength of character, which earned her the description as 'dynamite' from a studio executive. Her marriages to Chaplin, actor Burgess Meredith, and writer Erich Maria Remarque received significant media attention. Post marrying Remarque, she moved to Switzerland and mostly retired from acting. She continued to be a notable socialite in the 1980s. She died in Switzerland in 1990.
