On the edge of a quiet wood, a lively circle of gypsy caravans sets up camp, filling the night with song and dance. They soon discover they’ve pitched right on the estate of Count Arnheim, a stern man who will not tolerate trespass. The group includes Gypsy Vagabond, Paulette Goddard, Gypsy Queen, Zeffie Tilbury, and Gypsy Queen’s Daughter, Thelma Todd, whose youth adds a spark to the camp while the elders preside over the sprawling camp life.
Stan Stan Laurel and Ollie Oliver Hardy form the misfit pair at the heart of the troupe. Stan’s humor and occasional bewilderment mix with Ollie’s practical stubbornness as they drift through the gypsy routine—pickpocketing, fortune-telling, and even zither lessons—creating a steady cadence of laughs and small calamities that keep the Count’s hunters on edge.
Mae Busch(/actor/mae-busch) portrays Mrs. Hardy, a sharp and controlling foil whose presence intensifies the troupe’s tensions. Her relationship with Devilshoof, Antonio Moreno, becomes a dangerous thread in the gypsy tapestry, especially after Devilshoof bears the lash under the Count’s orders. The power imbalance between the aristocrat’s cruelty and the gypsy camp’s resilience threads through the entire story, driving many of the troupe’s hasty, reckless moves.
In a vengeful turn triggered by Devilshoof’s punishment, Mrs. Hardy orchestrates a dramatic scheme: she abducts the Count’s daughter, Arline, Darla Hood, and deceives Hardy into believing the child is their own. The ruse sows distrust and turmoil within the caravan, leaving Oliver torn between loyalty and the increasingly tangled web of deceit that binds the group together. Arline herself is innocent of the adults’ schemes, scarcely able to remember life before her dramatic disappearance.
Twelve years slip by, and the Gypsies return to Arnheim’s estate, a country chorus of old songs and worn jackets. Adult Arline inadvertently trespasses in Arnheim’s garden and recognizes the place—and the Count’s voice—yet she is quickly arrested by Captain Finn, James Finlayson, and sentenced to a lash. Stan and Oliver attempt to intervene, but their plan is foiled, and they too are arrested. The tension crescendos as Arline is brought forth for her punishment, only to be saved at the last moment by Arnheim, who recognizes a medallion she wears and a family birthmark that bind her to a past he partly remembers. They both rush to rescue Stan and Oliver, but fate has other plans.
What follows is a cruel, surreal culmination. Laurel and Hardy have already endured the tortures of the chamber, with Hardy stretched to a monstrous eight-foot height and Stan crushed to only a few feet tall. The captain of the guard remains a chorus of moans and furious cries, a grim reminder of the forces that crushed their earlier hopes. The scene lingers on the grotesque transformation and the stubborn endurance of the two friends, whose bond and willingness to risk everything for Arline and one another defines this strange blend of slapstick and pathos.
