In 1885 France, Celestine [Paulette Goddard] begins a new life as a chambermaid at the Lanlaire family estate, hoping to climb higher on the social ladder. She starts with her new employer, Monsieur Lanlaire, and quickly wins his favor, his attention leaning toward her warm company rather than that of his domineering wife, Madame Lanlaire [Judith Anderson]. The quiet household atmosphere is soon disturbed by the arrival of the eccentric neighbor, Captain Mauger [Burgess Meredith], who becomes fixated on having Celestine under his roof and offers to marry her as a path to wealth if she comes to live with him.

Meanwhile, the Lanlaire home receives a temporary shakeup as Georges Lanlaire [Hurd Hatfield], the sickly son of the family, returns from parts unknown. His mother schemes to keep him around longer by dressing Celestine in fine clothes and insisting she tend to his every need, hoping a swifter courtship will anchor him to the estate. The plan backfires as Georges contemplates a Parisian future, and Madame Lanlaire doubles down, sending Celestine to his room with broth in a bid to keep him from leaving.

Tensions rise when Celestine, disillusioned by the manipulation, quits and tries to head into town with the loyal but morally pliable valet, Joseph [Francis Lederer]. Joseph reveals a plan to pilfer the Lanlaire silverware on Bastille Day, using Celestine as a potential ally, and nudges her to stay and help him pull it off. Yet Madame Lanlaire, ever vigilant, overhears their discussion and spoils that direct theft. Undeterred, Joseph pivots his scheme toward Captain Mauger’s hidden money, and the two of them set their sights on a new target.

The chase intensifies as Joseph explores Mauger’s house while the captain celebrates elsewhere. When Mauger returns and catches him in the act, Joseph is forced to kill the captain to escape with what he’s taken. With the estate’s silverware now a bargaining chip and his future with Celestine hanging in the balance, Joseph announces his intent to quit his position and marry Celestine, a prospect that Madame Lanlaire greets with rare joy, realizing Georges has fallen for the maid’s charms. She sweetens the deal by offering the silverware to Joseph if he leaves the estate and takes Celestine with him.

Yet time and crowds conspire against them. Delays caused by revelers in the village give Georges the opportunity to catch up, and a tense confrontation erupts between Joseph and Georges. The deadly clash ends with Joseph dead, clearing the way for a different future. In the final turn, Georges and Celestine flee the Lanlaire estate together, stepping into an uncertain horizon as the estate’s tangled web of ambition collapses behind them.
