In the 1920s in British Burma, the Sawbwa’s son is killed—apparently by his European mining partner, Jim Brecan. The Sawbwa demands Brecan’s capture and execution, while Captain Cardigan pushes for a proper trial. Brecan escapes into the jungle with a bag of rubies from the mine, seeking shelter, and he reaches the tea-green estate of Gwen Moore, who uses elephants to harvest teak. He arrives there under the alias “Jim Martin,” and, despite the escape, the two are drawn to each other. Brecan helps her handle a string of problems around the estate, including a dangerous tiger, and Gwen gradually makes him her manager.

When Cardigan shows up at the estate, Brecan flees again after recognizing the magistrate’s identity. Gwen intervenes, and her intervention stops Brecan from killing Cardigan, which allows Cardigan to take Brecan into custody and begin the journey back toward Rangoon. Their path is interrupted when Kaw bandits ambush them during a night stop, giving Brecan another chance to slip away. A spell of weather then traps the trio together on a night in an abandoned Buddhist temple, adding tension and forcing a fragile cooperation.

Brecan and Gwen finally return to her estate, but the local police soon attack, and Gwen is wounded. Brecan surrenders and is taken to Rangoon for punishment. A twist arrives when a boy who served the dead prince comes with a letter from the prince to the Sawbwa. The Sawbwa reads the letter and condemns Brecan to death, but Gwen and Cardigan arrive just in time, and the letter reveals a grave secret: the prince, stricken by plague, was delirious and prepared to expose a village to disease, forcing Brecan to shoot him to prevent catastrophe. Hearing this, the Sawbwa relents and releases Brecan.

With the ruby fortune handed over to the Sawbwa, Brecan and Gwen seem poised to begin a new life together, leaving readers with the sense that their bond could endure beyond the turmoil that started it all.
