Jean Merilyn Simmons OBE (31 January 1929 – 22 January 2010) was a highly celebrated British actress and singer. She started her career in Britain during and after the Second World War, and later transitioned to Hollywood from 1950 onwards. Simmons was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Hamlet (1948) and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role in Guys and Dolls (1955). Her other popular film acts include Great Expectations (1946), Black Narcissus (1947), The Blue Lagoon (1949), among others. She further won laurels and an Emmy Award for her stupendous performance in the miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983).

Born in Islington, London, Simmons began her acting career at the age of 14. She was signed to a seven-year contract with the J. Arthur Rank Organisation in 1945. One of her most notable performances was in the film Great Expectations (1946), which was a grand success on the British box office in 1947. Despite the initial ups and downs in her career, Simmons remained a prominent figure in Hollywood. During her acting journey, she worked with many renowned stars and directors like Frank Launder, William Wyler, Marlon Brando, among others. Her personal life was also quite eventful, having been married twice. Simmons died in 2010 from lung cancer, leaving behind a timeless legacy in film industry.
