Shot in CinemaScope, the story follows a drunken Roman, Marcellus Gallio, who wins Jesus’ robe in a dice game after the crucifixion. Though never faithful, his slave Demetrius steals the garment, causing Marcellus to endure disturbing visions and guilt. Convinced that destroying the robe will free him, he pursues Demetrius and discovers Christianity along the way.
