A stagecoach bound for Jericho is ambushed by Alex Flood [Dean Martin], a lawman who has turned rogue. From a distance, Flood’s aiming is precise, wounding the coach’s driver, Ben Hickman [John McIntire], who is then brought into town with the lone passenger, the gambler Dolan [George Peppard].

Hickman is a former Santa Fe lawman, and Dolan once served as his deputy. Now they run the stage line together with Molly Lang [Jean Simmons], a woman who once loved Flood when he first came to restore order, but who now despises the man who has seized control of the town.

Flood wastes no time in asserting his power, forming a lynch mob that hangs a man who dares challenge one of his enforcers, and then dynamites the home of Frank Ryan [Richard O’Brien], the general store owner who tried to organize a secret meeting. While Hickman slowly recovers from the gunshot, Dolan grows uneasy about Flood’s grip and decides to stand with Molly when Flood’s men push to take over her stagecoach line. He even lands in a heated confrontation with Yarbrough [Slim Pickens], one of Flood’s most loyal enforcers.

Dolan begins to sow chaos within Flood’s empire, stealing cattle and striking at Flood’s holdings—his ranch, his mill, and his gold mine. He is aided by Hickman, Molly Lang, and Frank Ryan, along with Jace [Don Galloway], the town’s former deputy, who lend him a hand as Jericho teeters under Flood’s rule.

Flood returns to Jericho seeking revenge and wastes no time; he shoots Hickman in the back, killing him. Dolan decides to pursue Flood for a climactic showdown in the hills. After Flood shoots Dolan in the arm, Dolan manages to hurl a knife and kill Flood, bringing an end to his reign of intimidation.
