What Is Rough Night in Jericho About?

The premise of Rough Night in Jericho in 298 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

The dusty streets of Jericho offer no sanctuary for the weary, operating instead under a suffocating blanket of corruption. At the helm of this lawless domain stands Alex Flood, a sheriff who has traded his badge for unchecked power, ruling the territory with a blend of authority and menace. His influence pervades every corner of the town, establishing a status quo where justice is merely a memory and fear is the ultimate currency. It is a place where order has been twisted into something predatory, leaving the townspeople to navigate a landscape where survival often requires looking the other way.

Yet, even in this environment, a spark of defiance remains. The local stagecoach line, owned by the resolute widow Molly Lang and managed by her partner, Hickman, represents the sole enterprise that has not bowed to Flood’s demands. Their independence is a thorn in the sheriff’s side, a visible crack in his veneer of absolute control. When Dolan, a former deputy turned driver, steps into this powder keg, he brings with him a history of law enforcement and a desire to avoid conflict. He is a man who understands the mechanics of power in the West, preferring to keep his distance from the town’s simmering resentments.

However, maintaining neutrality proves difficult in a town where one man’s greed knows no bounds. As Flood’s enforcers, led by the ruthless Yarbrough, move to seize control of the stagecoach line, the pressure mounts on those simply trying to survive. The tension escalates from a quiet unease to a palpable threat, forcing Dolan to reconsider his passive stance. The conflict promises a gritty exploration of morality, as the lines between duty and survival blur, setting the stage for a harsh reckoning in a town that has forgotten what true justice looks like.

Spoilers ahead

A stagecoach bound for Jericho is ambushed by Alex Flood [Dean Martin], a lawman who has turned rogue. From a distance, Flood’s aiming is precise, wounding the coach’s driver, Ben Hickman [John McIntire], who is then brought into town with the lone passenger, the gambler Dolan [George Peppard].

Hickman is a former Santa Fe lawman, and Dolan once served as his deputy. Now they run the stage line together with Molly Lang [Jean Simmons], a woman who once loved Flood when he first came to restore order, but who now despises the man who has seized control of the town.

Flood wastes no time in asserting his power, forming a lynch mob that hangs a man who dares challenge one of his enforcers, and then dynamites the home of Frank Ryan [Richard O’Brien], the general store owner who tried to organize a secret meeting. While Hickman slowly recovers from the gunshot, Dolan grows uneasy about Flood’s grip and decides to stand with Molly when Flood’s men push to take over her stagecoach line. He even lands in a heated confrontation with Yarbrough [Slim Pickens], one of Flood’s most loyal enforcers.

Dolan begins to sow chaos within Flood’s empire, stealing cattle and striking at Flood’s holdings—his ranch, his mill, and his gold mine. He is aided by Hickman, Molly Lang, and Frank Ryan, along with Jace [Don Galloway], the town’s former deputy, who lend him a hand as Jericho teeters under Flood’s rule.

Flood returns to Jericho seeking revenge and wastes no time; he shoots Hickman in the back, killing him. Dolan decides to pursue Flood for a climactic showdown in the hills. After Flood shoots Dolan in the arm, Dolan manages to hurl a knife and kill Flood, bringing an end to his reign of intimidation.
