When jockey Chris Kirby is fatally injured in a horse race, he asks his best friend Adam Black to promise to look after his teenage daughter Evelyne Wallace. Evelyne has been led to believe that Adam is her father, a truth that Adam cannot reveal, and even his loyal butler and friend Bill Murray struggles to deliver the confession. In the end, Adam’s sometime girlfriend, Moira, breaks the hard news to the girl.
Adam sends Evelyne Wallace to an exclusive boarding school, aiming to shield her from the gambling world. Years later, she unexpectedly reappears in his life, and she discovers that Adam’s fortune comes from gambling—though he shields her from the illegal side, claiming his money comes from the stock exchange. She begins a casual relationship with Roddy Black, Adam’s brother, who harbors his own resentments and schemes.
Tension escalates when Adam announces an exit from the business. Moira accuses him of being in love with his ward, complicating the already delicate balance. Roddy, driven by spite, alerts the police to Adam’s final deal, while he also drags Evelyne along to witness what Adam really does for a living, a revelation that shocks her to the core.
A kindly gambler, Col. Bradley, offers sage counsel and helps Evelyne see a path that might lead to reconciliation with Adam. With his guidance, she begins to rethink the loyalties that have defined her life and starts to weigh the possibility of mending the fractured relationship at the heart of this clash between affection, secrecy, and ambition.
