Ichirō Sugai (菅井一郎) was born on 25 July 1907 in Rukahara (now Higashiyama Ward), Kyoto, Japan. He left junior high school prematurely and entered the Kyoto section of the Nikkatsu film company in 1925, beginning a career that would span more than four decades. In the 1930s he moved to Shinkō Kinema, where he started to gain notice for his versatile supporting roles, and in 1939 he founded the actors group Dai‑ichi kyōdan before becoming a freelance performer. His early screen appearances include Kenji Mizoguchi’s The Water Magician (1933) and The Straits of Love and Hate (1937), both of which showcased his ability to convey deep emotion in period dramas. After World War II, Sugai’s reputation grew dramatically; he became a highly sought‑after character actor, working with such legendary directors as Kaneto Shindō, Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita, Tadashi Imai, Shōhei Imamura, and Yasujirō Ozu. Over his lifetime he appeared in more than three hundred films, a testament to his extraordinary stamina and adaptability.

In addition to his prolific acting career, Sugai directed two films: Dorodarake no seishun (1954) and Furanki no uchūjin (1957), demonstrating a modest but notable flair for filmmaking. Notable performances in the 1950s and 1960s include roles in The Life of Oharu (1952), Sansho the Bailiff (1954), Odd Obsession (1959), and the popular kaiju picture Gamera vs. Barugon (1966). His collaborations with Mizoguchi continued with masterpieces such as The Crucified Lovers (1954) and Night Drum (1958). Sugai’s enduring presence on screen, combined with his occasional directorial ventures, cemented his status as a cornerstone of Japanese cinema until his death on 11 August 1973.
