Gösta Ekman, born Hans Gösta Gustaf Ekman on 28 July 1939 in Stockholm, Sweden, emerged from a legendary Swedish theatrical dynasty that spanned three generations. His grandfather, also named Gösta Ekman, was a celebrated actor, and his father Hasse Ekman was a prominent film director and actor, providing young Gösta with a rich artistic environment from birth. After serving as an assistant director for luminaries such as Ingmar Bergman between 1956 and 1961, he launched his own acting career on stage at venues like Alléteatern and Stockholm City Theatre, quickly becoming known for his versatile talent that could shift from comedy to serious drama with equal skill. In film, Ekman made his mark through a prolific partnership with the comic duo Hasse & Tage, starring in iconic productions such as The Apple War and The Adventures of Picasso, while also portraying the beloved detective Martin Beck in a series of police thrillers that cemented his status as a household name across Sweden. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he starred in the wildly popular Jönssonligan series, delivering the charismatic “Sickan” character that fans still recall fondly. Despite officially retiring in 2003, his passion drew him back to the screen in 2005 to act in two of his wife Marie‑Louise Ekman’s films, Asta Nilssons sällskap and Pingvinresan, and he continued to contribute to theatre by directing productions such as Gäckanden for the Royal Dramatic Theatre. His achievements were recognized with a Guldbagge Award for Best Actor in 1993 and a special Honorable Guldbagge in 2008 for his lifelong service to Swedish cinema and theatre.
