Margaretha Krook (born Margareta Knutsdotter Krook on 15 October 1925 in Stockholm) was one of Sweden’s most respected stage and screen performers, whose career spanned over five decades. She made her film debut in 1949 as Berta in Only a Mother and quickly became known for her striking presence and versatility, moving effortlessly between supporting roles such as the governess in Miss Julie (1951) and more prominent parts like the doctor in Ingmar Bergman’s cult classic Persona (1966). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s she appeared in a steady stream of productions, ranging from historical dramas such as Karin Månsdotter to contemporary comedies, while also establishing a formidable reputation on the boards of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Her stage work earned her the prestigious Eugene O'Neill Award in 1974, and two years later she captured the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress for her performance in Release the Prisoners to Spring (1976). In recognition of her cultural contributions, the Swedish government bestowed upon her the Illis quorum medal in 1995 for her celebrated portrayal of Gertrude Stein at the Royal Dramatic Theatre.

Beyond the silver screen, Krook lent her voice to animated features such as Dinosaur (2000) and Karlsson på taket (2002), and continued to work in television and film until her final appearance in the 2000 drama Gossip. Her personal life included a marriage to fellow actor Stig Hammar from 1956 until his death in 1981, a partnership that was widely respected in the Swedish artistic community. Margaretha Krook passed away on 7 May 2001 in Stockholm, leaving behind a legacy of powerful performances that continue to influence Swedish actors and captivate audiences worldwide.
