Cecilia Ellius Ingrid Thulin is admitted to a hospital after she begins to bleed in her third month of pregnancy. She is accompanied by her husband, Anders Ellius Erland Josephson. Before any treatment, Cecilia asks Anders whether he truly wants the child, and he replies that it is too late to raise that conversation now. The medical procedure proceeds, and when Cecilia awakens, she learns that she has miscarried. In a quiet, tearful moment, she tells the hospital staff that she had wanted the child, while she feels that Anders did not, and that a child would not have been born into a life with only one loving parent. When Anders returns to the hospital, Cecilia initiates a separation, explaining that she has come to realize Anders did not truly love her as they had arrived at the institution.

Another patient, Hjördis Bibi Andersson, is admitted after she begins bleeding during pregnancy and reveals that she had tried to terminate the pregnancy but failed. She is not married or engaged, and she has not told her strict mother about the pregnancy. The medical staff explain that in Sweden, unmarried young mothers no longer face the old social stigma, and that practical help—housing and daycare—may be available. Yet Hjördis still wrestles with doubt and fear about the future. Encouraged by Nurse Brita Barbro Hiort af Ornäs, she decides to call her mother, only to be told to come home and face the situation.

A third storyline follows Stina Andersson Eva Dahlbeck, who is overdue for delivery and eagerly anticipates meeting her child. She is convinced she will have a boy and intends to name him after her devoted husband, Harry Max von Sydow, who visits her during the anticipation. To hasten the process, she receives castor oil and a glass of beer, a combination that leads to increasingly violent and painful contractions. The medical team sedates her as the intensity of labor grows, and she ultimately endures a stillbirth. Dr. Nordlander Gunnar Sjöberg informs her that both she and the fetus were healthy, but that fate had other plans, underscoring a tragedy that feels inexplicable even to those trained to treat the body.

Across these interwoven stories, the film presents a sober, patient-centered portrait of pregnancy, loss, and the evolving social context in a Nordic hospital. The quiet conversations between patients, the practical guidance offered by the nursing staff, and the sometimes fraught exchanges with loved ones all contribute to a tapestry of hope, doubt, and resilience. The characters’ experiences—Cecilia’s painful realization of love and separation, Hjördis’s grapple with independence and family ties, and Stina’s devastating outcome—collectively illuminate how personal desires collide with medical realities and societal expectations, leaving each character to face an uncertain but ongoing journey.
