Cecilia Ellius Ingrid Thulin is admitted to a hospital after she begins to bleed in her third month of pregnancy. She is accompanied by her husband, Anders Ellius Erland Josephson. Before any treatment, Cecilia asks Anders whether he truly wants the child, and he replies that it is too late to raise that conversation now. The medical procedure proceeds, and when Cecilia awakens, she learns that she has miscarried. In a quiet, tearful moment, she tells the hospital staff that she had wanted the child, while she feels that Anders did not, and that a child would not have been born into a life with only one loving parent.
