What's After the Movie
Inga Landgré (born Inga Linnéa Lundgren on 6 August 1927 in Stockholm, Sweden) was a celebrated Swedish actress whose career spanned eight decades, encompassing stage, television, and film. She grew up in a turbulent household; her father was a struggling musician whose battles with alcoholism contributed to her parents’ divorce when she was only five, and she was raised primarily by her mother, a waitress, as an only child. After completing her theatrical training at the renowned Calle Flygare Teaterskola, Landgré made her professional debut in 1944 at the Blanche Theatre, playing Anya in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, a role that showcased her natural talent for both drama and subtle comedy. Around the same time she entered Swedish cinema, appearing in the 1943 film Ordet and quickly gaining attention for her poise and expressive presence. Her breakthrough on the big screen came with Crisis (1946), Ingmar Bergman’s directorial debut, where she delivered a nuanced performance that cemented her status as one of the leading young actresses of post‑war Sweden. Over the following decades she worked with many of the country’s most respected directors and theatrical companies, navigating the transition from classic repertory to modern television productions with equal skill. In 1949 she married fellow actor Nils Poppe, a partnership that produced two children, one of whom followed her into acting, and lasted until 1959. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Landgré demonstrated a daring civic spirit in the 1960s, acting as a courier for her friend Andreas Papandreou by transporting microfilm to Greece, an act that reflects the breadth of her personal convictions. Recognized for her lifelong contributions, she received the prestigious Guldbagge Honorary Award in 2011 (presented in January 2012), and continued to appear in performances well into her nineties. Inga Landgré passed away on 31 July 2023 in Norberg, Sweden, at the age of 95, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire Swedish actors and audiences alike.
