Sandy Dennis as Rosamund Stacey, a young bookish woman in London society, spends her days working on her dissertation in the British Museum and her nights avoiding the sexual attention of the men in her life. Through a chance meeting with rising TV newsreader/announcer Ian McKellen as George Matthews, and a tumble on the sofa, she finds herself pregnant from her first sexual encounter.
After a failed attempt at self-induced abortion, Rosamund resolves to have the child, setting off on a solitary and at times discouraging path through pregnancy as a single mother. Her life changes when Eleanor Bron as Lydia, a friend who had been averse to roommates, moves in with her, providing both companionship and practical support as she navigates the early weeks of motherhood and her academic work.
Her child is born and soon diagnosed with a congenital heart defect that requires surgery. The operation is performed by Maurice Denham as Doctor Prothero, a friend of Rosamund’s father, who shares the gravity of the moment with Rosamund and her family. The procedure offers a glimmer of hope, but the hospital environment soon tests Rosamund’s resolve.
The head nurse, Penelope Keith (uncredited), will not allow Rosamund to see her baby while the child is in recovery, creating a painful distance between mother and child at a critical moment. After several attempts to breach that barrier, Rosamund’s voice rises in a desperate, piercing scream until the surgeon arrives and reassures her that she can indeed hold her infant again, a moment that marks a turning point in her emotional journey.
From that point on, Rosamund remains at the hospital, choosing to stay by her baby’s side while she continues her thesis, turning the experience into a catalyst rather than a distraction. She completes her doctorate and is offered a job in Edinburgh, a promising professional future that now intertwines with her role as a mother.
A chance encounter occurs when she runs into Ian McKellen as George Matthews at the pharmacist. He is happy to see her and returns with her to meet the child, a moment filled with quiet warmth and mutual recognition of the distance they had previously insisted could not be bridged. George’s invitation to travel together offers a glimpse of what might have been, but the conversation also reveals a shared belief: people cannot easily change their fundamental nature.
In a narrative that gently balances ambition, motherhood, and the social expectations of its era, Rosamund’s story unfolds with tenderness and resilience. The film quietly asserts that steadfast love and professional dedication can coexist, even as it acknowledges the stubborn truths about desire, responsibility, and the shape of a life drawn between two worlds.
