Charles Judels was a Dutch‑born American actor whose career spanned the silent era into the golden age of Hollywood animation. Born in Amsterdam on 1882‑08‑10, he came from a third‑generation theatrical family; his grandfather owned several Dutch theatres and his father served for 35 years as a stage manager for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Judels moved to the United States where he quickly became a familiar face in early cinema, appearing in more than 130 films from 1915 to 1949, often portraying European characters such as aristocrats, chefs, and innkeepers. His deep, resonant voice made him a valuable asset in the emerging field of voice‑over work, most famously providing the voices of Stromboli and the Coachman in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio (1940), albeit uncredited, and later contributing to wartime propaganda cartoons.

Beyond acting, Judels was signed by 20th Century Fox in 1928 to direct Movietone newsreels, showcasing his versatility behind the camera. He was a long‑standing member of The Lambs, a renowned New York theatrical club, since 1909, indicating his deep roots in the performing arts community. He continued to work steadily through the 1940s, taking roles in notable titles such as The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Ninotchka (1939), and Samson and Delilah (1949). Judels passed away in San Francisco on 1969‑02‑14 at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of diverse performances that bridged silent film, talkies, and early animation.
