Set in the turn of the 20th century, the film centers on Joseph E. Howard, Mark Stevens, an aspiring songwriter who happily sells a song to performer Lulu Madison, Martha Stewart, who later claims sole credit for writing it. He confronts her in anger, but she distracts him by seducing him in her hotel suite. Believing his talent could boost her career, she invites him to serve as her personal piano player on tour. He accepts the invitation and bids a bittersweet farewell to Katie, the young niece of his guardian John McCullem George Cleveland.
On the road, Joe grows into a successful songwriter. Katie follows him to Philadelphia and joins the tour by lying about her uncle’s death. Katie’s presence distracts Joe, while Lulu makes her displeasure obvious. Katie remains unfazed and continues supporting Joe’s career instead of falling back under Lulu’s control. One evening, Lulu tries to cancel Joe’s performance, and Katie responds by ruining Lulu’s costume, allowing Joe to perform his latest song, which earns wild applause.
After Lulu fires him, Joe and Katie form their own group, working for producers Karl and Kassel. However, Joe is later seduced by the alluring Fritzi Barrington to work for her. Lenore Aubert brings a fresh vitality to their partnership, which proves successful but ultimately fragile, as a jealous financial backer—often described as a flame from the past—withdraws his support to protect his own interests.
The duo eventually makes their Broadway debut and enjoys a period of collaboration, until Fritzi retires to marry Martin Webb Truman Bradley. This setback fuels a sense of betrayal in Joe, who blames Katie for scaring away Fritzi, given that Katie is her understudy in the show. Sometime later, Joe discovers Katie performing under the stage name Pat O’Dare, singing an unpublished song of his, “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now.” The revelation leads to a moment of surprise and emotion as the two finally share a kiss, hinting at unresolved tensions and a possible reconciliation as their paths intersect once more.
