It All Came True 1940

An aspiring songwriter Tommy Taylor, Jeffrey Lynn, pins his hopes on the promises of his employer, a gambler and gangster Chips Maguire, Humphrey Bogart, who hides behind the alias Grasselli. When a betrayal sends Monks into trouble with the police, Chips uses the gun registered in Tommy’s name to murder him and makes it clear that Tommy will pay as the fall guy. Needing a place to hide, Chips resorts to blackmail, forcing Tommy to drive him to the boarding house run by Nora Taylor, Tommy’s mother, and her longtime friend Maggie Ryan, Una O’Connor. The plan is simple but perilous: deliver him a safe refuge, or see the gun turned over to law enforcement.

Nora is overjoyed to see her son after five years apart, and Tommy introduces him as Grasselli, a man pretending to recover from a nervous condition. Maggie’s showgirl daughter, Sarah Jane Ryan, Ann Sheridan, arrives on the same day, and the two mothers dream of marriage between their children. Yet the young woman who intrigues Chips is wary of his cover; Sarah Jane grows suspicious of Grasselli and eventually hides in the hall bathroom, recognizing the man she once served. Rather than risk trouble for Nora and Maggie, she agrees to keep Chips’s secret, and the uneasy setup tightens around them.

Chips gradually moves from paranoia to social ease, mingling with the other boarders—the sharp-witted Miss Flint, Zasu Pitts; the earnest Rene Salmon, Grant Mitchell; the washed-up magician The Great Boldini, Felix Bressart; and the peculiar Mr. Van Diver, Brandon Tynan. In the parlor, the group’s amateur performances become a rehearsal for something bigger: turning the boarding house into an exclusive nightclub that would showcase Tommy’s songs and Sarah Jane’s talents, while giving Chips a secure vantage point over everyone else.

As financial pressures mount—Nora and Maggie face the loss of their home due to unpaid taxes—Sarah Jane pleads with Chips for help. He provides money, but the solution is more audacious: transform the boarding house into a venue that earns money and keeps their lives in the light. Tommy and Sarah Jane become partners on stage, while Chips quietly protects his own position in the background. Nora remains hopeful, and Maggie’s initial reluctance gradually softens as the idea takes shape.

The plan hits a snag when Miss Flint spots Chips’s photo in a crime magazine, and the secret ramps up the stakes. Sarah Jane warns that sharing the truth could bring down everyone, but fear and ambition push her toward a fateful decision. On opening night, overindulgence in champagne reveals the cracks in their masquerade, and the police are suddenly aware of Chips’s presence inside the nightclub. Two detectives observe the show from the crowd, but allow the performance to continue as Tommy fights for calm and safety.

Tommy, alarmed by the sight of law enforcement, climbs to the roof to seek silence and space, where he and Sarah Jane finally confront their feelings. He confesses his love for her, and she urges him to escape, to start anew away from the tangled web. Chips, faced with a choice that could implicate Tommy, chooses not to flee but to confess the murder himself, granting the young lovers a chance at a fresh, honest life together. In the end, the revelation narrows the path to redemption for everyone involved, with the hope that their future begins on cleaner terms than their pasts.
