Cec Linder (born Cecil Yekuthial Linder on 10 March 1921 in Radziechowy, Galicia, then part of Poland) was a Polish‑born Canadian actor whose long‑standing career spanned four decades across three continents. After his family fled the rising threat of the Holocaust, they settled in Timmins, Ontario where his father served as a rabbi for the local Jewish community, providing Linder with a culturally rich upbringing. He began his professional life not on a stage but behind a microphone, working as an announcer for CKGB radio in his hometown before transitioning to acting in 1955. Linder’s early film work quickly led to opportunities in the United Kingdom, where he became a familiar face portraying North‑American characters in British productions. His breakthrough television role arrived in 1958–59 when he was cast as the paleontologist Dr. Matthew Roney in the influential BBC serial Quatermass and the Pit, a performance that cemented his reputation for authoritative, intellectual characters. Throughout the 1960s he alternated between UK and North‑American projects, appearing in acclaimed films such as Lolita (1962) as Dr. Keegee and the iconic James Bond thriller Goldfinger (1964) as CIA operative Felix Leiter, roles that showcased his versatility and subtle screen presence. In the United States Linder became a regular on daytime dramas, notably The Secret Storm and The Edge of Night, while in Canada he achieved popularity as Crown Attorney Spenser on the 1980s crime series Seeing Things. He continued to lend his talent to a wide array of guest spots on series like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Saint, The New Avengers and The Littlest Hobo, as well as to radio dramatizations of Nero Wolfe stories in 1982. His later years saw him portray District Attorney Jack Welles in the Perry Mason TV movies and appear as Syd Grady in the series Sweating Bullets (1991), his final screen credit. Linder accumulated over 225 film and television credits before his death from emphysema complications at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital on 10 April 1992. Remembered for his dignified demeanor, steady voice, and the ability to embody both scientific intellect and covert operatives, Cec Linder left an enduring legacy that continues to be celebrated by classic film and television enthusiasts.
