Ernest Tilley, a former scientist who lost his daughter two years earlier in a hit-and-run, tracks down James Brock, the man he believes is responsible for the accident, and boards the same airliner on a transatlantic flight from London to New York.
On board, Tilley has hidden a bomb and threatens to blow it up, a vengeful act that would kill Brock and every passenger and crew member. The passengers include his second wife, Carol Tilley, whom he met after his daughter’s death, a relationship that underscores the strain of his past marriage.
When Captain Bardow and the rest of the crew realize he is serious and cannot locate the bomb (which Tilley had attached to the underside of the airliner’s left wing), fear begins to spread through the cabin. Some passengers want to pressure him into revealing the bomb’s location, while others, such as Dr. Bergstein, try to reason with the now silent Tilley.
Allan Mulliner, a terrified passenger, makes a drastic move and attempts to kill Brock in a frantic bid to stop Tilley from triggering the bomb. Acting out of fear, Brock is killed when he smashes a window and is blown out of the airliner.
Jeremy Tracer, a young boy on board, helps calm Tilley, allowing him to regain his senses. He then disconnects the remote control for the bomb, and ends his own life by poison. As the aircraft nears New York, the surviving passengers realize they will make it to the other side of the ocean.
